Rutger Oelsen Hauer was born in the remote Breukelen area of the Netherlands[2] on 23 January 1944. It had occurred during World War II when Germany administered the Netherlands.

He was the only boy in a family with three daughters. According to Rutger Hauer, his parents were more concerned with their work than with their children, and as a result, he had a distant connection with his father.
