Ioan Gruffudd is a Welsh actor who first gained prominence as Fifth Officer Harold Lowe in 1997’s “Titanic” and later as Horatio Hornblower in the “Hornblower” television film series (1998-2003). Ioan also starred in a music video for Westlife’s rendition of “Uptown Girl” opposite Claudia Schiffer. In 1986, as a youngster, he made his television debut as Dafydd in the television series “Austin.” Ioan made his film debut as John Gray in the 1997 biographical film “Wilde.” Among his other famous film credits are “Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box,” “Fantastic 4,” “Amazing Grace,” and “King Arthur.” The Welsh actor is said to be worth $5 million[1]

Early Living

Gruffudd was born and raised in Llwydcoed, Aberdare, Wales, on 6 October 1973, the oldest of three siblings. Gruffudd’s parents were also teachers: Peter and Gillian (née James) Gruffudd. His father was the headmaster of two Welsh comprehensive schools in South Wales, first at Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari (in Llanharry, Rhondda Cynon Taf) and afterward at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen (in Rhydfelin). He has a two-year-old brother, Alun, and a seven-year-old sister, Siwan: The Gruffudd siblings had nurtured in a non-conformist Protestant family[2]

Gruffudd resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Alice Evans. The pair met on the set of 102 Dalmatians, when she was engaged to and living with Olivier Picasso (Peter Picasso’s grandson), and married in Mexico on 14 September 2007. Fellow Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, Gruffudd’s long-time friend and former housemate of eight years, was one of his best men and speechmakers during the wedding. Both are supporters of Trust PA, a UK-based charity dedicated to spinal injuries[3]

Gruffudd and Evans announced their pregnancy on 20 April 2009. Ella Betsi Janet: born on 6 September 2009, and Elsie Marigold are children (born on 13 September 2013).

Ioan Gruffudd Career

Gruffudd began his acting career as a child actor in a Welsh television film, Austin (1986), and then starred in the Welsh language serial opera Pobol y Cwm (People of the Valley) from 1987 until 1994. He played football with co-stars Hywel Emrys, Gwyn Elfyn, and Ieuan Rhys for the Pobol y Cwm football club Cwmderi FC.

In 1992, at the age of 18, he enrolled in London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He was, however, offered only minor roles in the Academy’s shows and, feeling lonely and directionless, came dangerously close to dropping out multiple times. Following his portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s lover John Gray in 1997’s Wilde, he landed his breakout role as Fifth Officer Harold Lowe in the blockbuster film Titanic. He then got the part of Horatio Hornblower in Hornblower, a Meridian adaptation of the C. S. Forester books that aired on ITV1 and A&E from 1998 to 2003.

He received great praise for his performance as British abolitionist William Wilberforce in the 2007 historical drama Amazing Grace. Gruffudd has also voiced characters from Marvel and DC Comics, including Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards) in Marvel’s Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and Mister Miracle in DC’s Justice League Unlimited (2004–06). In 2008, he starred with Julia Roberts and Ryan Reynolds in the Julia Roberts-Ryan Reynolds picture Fireflies in the Garden. The actor also appears in 2008’s The Secret of Moonacre. In 2009, he co-starred with Josh Brolin in W., a biopic of US President George W Bush in which Gruffudd portrayed Tony Blair. In 2011, he acted as the funder for a Sanctum cave dive.
