She married William Allan Oldfield in 1901. They didn’t have any kids. William was initially elected to the US House of Representatives in 1908 and served there for a total of 10 terms. Oldfield was very committed to his profession, drafting speeches and testifying before Congress, especially in the latter years of his employment.

In 1914, Oldfield’s mother relocated to live with her in Washington, D.C., and when she left Congress, Oldfield stayed in the city to take care of her. After her mother passed away in 1933, Oldfield retired to Washington, D.C., where she was active in several charity and civic groups. On April 12, 1962, in Washington, she passed away.

Her husband passed away on November 19, 1928, not long after being re-elected to his seat in the elections of that year. The Democratic Party selected Oldfield to succeed him without opposition, while the Republicans did not put up a candidate. She only had to contend with one opponent, an independent candidate, and on January 9, 1929, she won the special election. On January 11, 1929, she took the oath to complete her husband’s term in the 70th United States Congress. She was one of eight women in the House and the first woman from Arkansas to be elected to Congress.

She was elected to the 71st United States Congress for a full term on the same day as the special election, serving until March 3, 1931. (she did not run for reelection in 1930). She served on the Coinage, Weights and Measures, Expenditures in the Executive Departments, and Public Buildings and Grounds committees when she was a member of Congress. In January 1929, she supported money for Prohibition enforcement as one of her first official acts.

She followed party lines and concentrated on issues affecting her people in Arkansas. On January 12, 1930, she made her maiden floor statement in the House, endorsing a food aid measure and urging assistance for people in need in Arkansas during the Great Depression. Additionally, she introduced legislation to fund the building of bridges across her area’s Black and White rivers.

Oldfield always wore black while at the workplace. When the other Arkansas representative passed away in 1930, his wife Effiegene Locke Wingo took his position. For the first time, the same state was represented by two women.

While the feminist movement was promoting demands for women’s participation in politics—”There are thousands of women in the United States who would give half their own to be in Pearl Peden Oldfield’s place,” according to one newspaper account—Oldfield said politics should be left to men when she left office rather than seek reelection.

She informed the journalist, “There are so many other things a woman can accomplish that a male can’t. Why not carry them out and let the guys assist as they can? The media asked her questions “solely because I am a woman and not because my opinion holds any weight,” she said, “frustrated me.” She often expressed the opinion that women should only join politics based on their qualifications, not because of any specific sex-related characteristics, and that once in government, they should not concentrate on “feminine” issues.
